This hat works up quickly with chunky yarn–I made the one pictured in a weekend. The flaps and button add options to make the hat extra warm on cold, windy days. This has not been test-knit by anyone other than me, so there may be some errors–let me know if you find one. I’ve also provided two colorwork charts–if you opt to use the first one for the child’s size, I would skip rows 7-8 and 16-17 (I am working up a child’s size right now using the second chart. And now, without further ado, the pattern:
Sizes: Child (Adult)
Finished circumference 18, (21”)
Materials
90 (110) yards chunky yarn in main color (MC), and 30 (40) yards chunky yarn in contrast color (CC)
Size 9 (US) double pointed needles (or size to obtain gauge).
Gauge: 16 sts/4in
Earflaps (make 2)
Row 7: k 2, (3) sts. m1, k2, m1, k 2, (3)
Row 8: k3, p 2, (4), k3
Row 9: k3, k to 3 sts before end of row, k3
Row 10: k3, p to 3 sts before end of row, k3
Row 11: k3, m1, k to 3 sts before end of row, m1, k3
Row 12: k3, p to 3 sts before end of row, k3
Repeat rows 9-12 until 14, (18) sts are on needles. Work rows 9 and 10 once. Break yarn, place sts on holder, and make 2nd earflap.
Brim
CO 22, (24) sts. With RS facing, knit sts from 1st earflap off holder and onto needles. CO 22, (24) sts. With RS facing, knit sts from 2nd earflap off holder and onto needles.
Join sts.
Round 1: p 25, (27) sts, k 8, (12) sts, p 28, (30) sts, k 8, (12) sts, p 3 (3) sts.
Round 2: k 1 round
Repeat rows 1-2 twice (4 more rows worked total)
Body
Working stst in the round (knit every row), work color chart, beginning with row 1
Knit until hat measures 5, (6)” from bottom edge of brim.
Crown
Round 1: *k 10, (12) sts, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round
Round 2, and all even rounds: knit
Round 3: k 9, (11) sts, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round
Round 5: k 8, (10) sts, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round
Round 7: k 7, (9) sts, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round
Round 9: k 6, (8) sts, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round
Round 11: k 5, (7) sts, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round

Last round: *k2tog, repeat from * to end of round. 6 sts remaining. Break yarn, leaving 6-8” tail. Thread yarn back through live sts and pull tight.
Button loop: On inside edge of left earflap, pick up 2 sts and work 2.5” i-cord. BO and sew loose end to earflap to create loop. Attach button to opposite flap.
Weave in all ends and block piece.
